week 1
Welcome & creative Collage
Theme: Explore textures and materials
Goal: Build confidence, introduce tools, encourage free creativity
Artists to inspire us: David Hockney, Kara Walker, Robert Rauschenberg
Activity:
Mixed-media collage using tissue paper, magazines, stickers, scrap cardboard, fabric pieces, and markers.
Encourage kids to make a “self-portrait,” “favorite animal,” or abstract art.
Materials: Glue sticks, safety scissors, cardboard bases, tissue paper, stickers, magazines, markers.
Extensions:
Older kids add 3D elements (folded paper, cardboard pop-outs).
Quick sharing circle at the end.
WEEK 2
Fun Frames
Theme: Exploring patters & texture, how we hang and observe our work.
Goal: Work with different materials, observe patterns and displays
Activity:
Decorate cardboard frames with cotton balls, clay shapes, paper, pens, and textures
Optionally add a photo or drawing inside.
Materials: Pre-cut cardboard frames, PVA glue, brushes, materials (cotton balls, wallpaper, beads, clay or brought by kids).
Extensions:
Older children create more complex designs.
Younger ones use larger, easier objects to glue.
week 3
Sewing & Textile Fun
Theme: Introduction to soft crafts
Goal: Build fine motor skills
Artist to inspire us: Tracy Emin & Martha Hussey
Activity:
Using stitching and fabric strips to create designs.
Younger kids can decorate felt squares with glue instead of sewing.
Materials: Pre-cut felt shapes, yarn, plastic needles, googly eyes, fabric markers, glue.
Extensions:
Older children design their own shapes.
Add buttons or simple embroidery for confident sewers.
WEEK 4
Paper Crafting & Pop-Up Art
Theme: Transforming paper
Goal: Learn folding, cutting, and design
Artist to inspire us: Polly Verity
Activity:
Make pop-up cards: birthday cards, thank-you cards, or imaginative scenes.
Demonstrate simple pop-up mechanisms (box fold, tab pop-ups).
Materials: Cardstock, paper, markers, stickers, scissors, glue.
Extensions:
Older kids add layered scenes or moving pieces.
Younger kids focus on decorating and simple folds.
week 5
Recycled Art Sculptures
Theme: Creativity with sustainability
Goal: Think 3D and use imagination
Artists to inspire us: Michelle Reader & Thomas Deininger
Activity:
Build junk-model sculptures (robots, animals, buildings, vehicles).
Encourage teamwork: pair up or make a class sculpture.
Materials: Recycled items (toilet rolls, boxes, bottles, lids), masking tape, paint, glue guns (low-temp, adult-handled), pipe cleaners.
Extensions:
Older kids plan their sculpture on paper first.
Younger children focus on assembling bold, simple shapes.
Week 6 — Painting Party & Showcase
Theme: Celebration & expression
Goal: Produce a final artwork and share achievements
Activity:
Canvas Painting (or thick cardstock): freestyle or themed (e.g., “Under the Sea,” “My Dream World”).
Display all term creations for a mini-gallery walk at the end.
Materials: Acrylic or washable paints, brushes, mini canvases/cardstock, aprons.
Extensions:
Older kids mix colors and add shading or detail.
Younger kids explore big shapes and bright colors.
